Ricky Gervais has faced criticism from fans for his social media activity following the news that his former The Office co-star Lucy Davis has been diagnosed with incurable breast cancer. Davis announced her diagnosis on August 11 and received an outpouring of support, with Gervais among the first to respond, posting a love heart emoji on her announcement, which she replied to with kisses.
Promotional posts spark anger
However, just four hours after the news broke, Gervais tweeted: "I do live broadcasts every Sunday on my YouTube channel. They're mostly s***. Please subscribe anyway." He also shared promotional posts for his Netflix cartoon, including fan reviews.
Fans reacted angrily, with one writing: "Bit tone deaf. Former co-worker on one of the most successful pieces of work you've been involved in, revealed she is terminally ill, and you're posting this stuff all evening." Another said: "Holy sh** Rick. I knew you were out of touch and a narcissist but you post this sh** after the news about Lucy?"
Mixed reactions from fans
Some defended Gervais, suggesting he may have been aware of Davis's condition privately. One supporter wrote: "Imagine being so stupid that you can't even fathom that he may well have known about this for a while, he may have had calls with her, visited her… we don't know do we but you keep on spitting your venom." Another added: "Not everything has to be pasted all over the internet, maybe it's none of your f***ing business and something he would rather deal with in private."
