Gary Lineker was roasted by Micah Richards on the Netflix show The Rest is Football after Harry Kane matched his record of six World Cup knockout goals in England's 3-2 victory over Mexico. Richards joked that Lineker was becoming excessively self-absorbed by repeatedly referencing his own achievements.
Lineker's Record Equalled
Kane, 32, scored from the penalty spot to register his sixth goal in a World Cup knockout match, drawing level with Lineker on the all-time list for England. The Bayern Munich forward now boasts 85 goals in 119 appearances for his country, surpassing Lineker's 48 goals in 80 caps. Kane had already become England's all-time leading World Cup scorer earlier in the tournament, netting in the 2-0 win against Panama.
Lineker, 65, opened the show by saying: "Harry Kane tonight equalled another record of mine tonight, Micah. Most knockout goals, he's now equalled six knockout goals. It took him two games longer [than me], but that's all right!"
Richards' Playful Dig
Richards responded: "Seriously Gary, it's getting embarrassing now! Have a night off, will you?" He added: "'The Rest is Gary Lineker', just do your own pod and talk about yourself for the whole 40 minutes." His remarks prompted laughter from guests Joe Hart, Alex Aljoe, Aitch, and Brad Friedel.
Lineker retorted with an expletive-laden comment: "I can't help having so many f***ing records, Micah! But they're all going, okay?" This triggered further laughter. Richards then launched into a chant beloved by England supporters, forcing Lineker to turn off the television broadcasting the stream. The banter continued as Richards reappeared on screen.
England's Victory and Next Fixture
With six goals in the tournament, Kane trails Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and Erling Haaland by one goal in the race for the World Cup Golden Boot. England will face Norway in the quarter-finals on Saturday after their victory at the Azteca Stadium. Despite thunderstorms delaying kick-off by an hour and the altitude of over 7,000 feet, Thomas Tuchel's side controlled the last-16 clash. Jude Bellingham scored twice in the first half, before Julian Quinones pulled one back. Jarell Quansah was sent off for a reckless challenge, but Kane's penalty gave England a 3-1 lead. A VAR decision led to a penalty for Mexico, converted by Raul Jimenez, but England held on for a 3-2 win.
