The Princess of Wales is preparing to join Prince William for a major overseas engagement, with reports indicating she will travel to India later this year for the Earthshot Prize Awards. This marks another important step in her gradual return to international royal duties, following several years of limited travel due to health challenges.
A Significant Milestone for the Couple
Royal commentator Russell Myers told OK!: “Following her successful return to international duties this year, which included her visit to Reggio Emilia in Italy for her early years research, Catherine is very much looking forward to attending the Earthshot Awards in India alongside her husband.”
Myers emphasized the significance of the trip, saying: “The fact that she’s planning to go to India is such a huge milestone, not only for her, but for the couple together. It will be almost four years since they travelled to Boston together to attend the Earthshot Awards, and even longer since they took on their major royal tour of the Caribbean, which was fraught with controversy.”
Past Joint Appearances
William, 44, and Catherine, 44, last travelled together to Boston in December 2022 for the second Earthshot Prize Awards, a three-day visit that was one of their most significant joint appearances in the United States. Earlier that year, they had undertaken an official tour of Belize, Jamaica, and the Bahamas to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.
However, parts of the Caribbean visit attracted controversy, including criticism over images of the couple greeting crowds through a wire fence in Jamaica and questions about the future relationship between the monarchy and Commonwealth realms. Following the tour, William issued an unusually candid statement acknowledging that the monarchy’s relationship with Commonwealth countries was changing.
A Gradual Return
Catherine stepped away from public duties in 2024 while undergoing treatment for cancer, dramatically reducing her public appearances and overseas travel. She later announced in September that year that she had completed chemotherapy, before revealing in January 2025 that she was in remission. Her subsequent return to royal life has been deliberately gradual, making the prospect of travelling to India particularly significant.
Myers believes the overseas appearance could provide William and Catherine with an opportunity to begin a fresh chapter together. He said: “This is a chance of renewal for both of them, and when they are together on the international stage, there is no doubt they have a far bigger impact.”
He added: “The Royal Family – and indeed the country – has been missing that, and the way they are prepared to take on this trip at a time of immense diplomatic sensitivity, bodes extremely well for the future.”
The trip would also bring Catherine directly into one of William’s most prominent personal projects. Prince William launched the Earthshot Prize in 2020 with the ambitious goal of finding and scaling solutions to some of the planet’s biggest environmental challenges.
