Plot and Cast

The film, adapted from Taichi Yamada's 1987 novel Strangers and directed by Andrew Haigh, follows Adam, an isolated screenwriter living in London. After the death of his parents three decades ago, Adam revisits his childhood home and discovers them miraculously still alive, exactly as they were when they passed away. As he opens up about his present life, his identity as a gay man, and the circumstances of their deaths, he also begins a romantic relationship with Harry, a mysterious neighbor. The two find solace in each other's company, exploring themes of grief and isolation.

The cast includes Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Jamie Bell, and Claire Foy. The film received widespread critical acclaim, earning six Bafta nominations, including Best Supporting Actor for Mescal and Best Supporting Actress for Foy.

Viewer Reactions

Audiences were deeply moved by the film. One viewer described it as "the saddest movie I ever saw," while another said, "I don't think I have cried so much at a film in a very long time." Many praised its emotional depth, with one fan calling it "a phenomenal psychological drama" and another branding it an "exceptional, haunting film." A viewer noted, "I was gripped by this film and could not take my eyes off the screen the whole time." Another added, "All of me wants to re-watch it all over again. It is very minimalistic, however it grabs you by the throat and never lets go."

Behind the Scenes

In a 2023 interview, Andrew Scott revealed that he drew on his own experiences for the role. He said, "I certainly drew on my own experience" and noted a connection to director Andrew Haigh's history, as the film was shot in Haigh's childhood home. Scott added, "We spoke an awful lot about our own experiences, and our own times of growing up in the early '90s, so I could feel so much in relation to my own pain or joy." He described the process as "a real catharsis" for him.

All Of Us Strangers airs on Channel 4 at 10pm on Monday, June 8.
