Nick Knowles Steps Back from TV for Family
DIY SOS star Nick Knowles has announced he will 'disappear' from television screens to care for his wife Katie, who is facing another major operation. The 63-year-old presenter, known for his long-running BBC home renovation show, shared the emotional personal update as he prioritises his wife's health.
Katie's Health Struggles
Katie Knowles, 36, a lingerie entrepreneur, has endured a series of medical ordeals. She underwent a hysterectomy last summer after years of pain from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis and adenomyosis. However, 12 weeks into recovery, the stitches in her cervix ruptured, leading to 'crippling abdominal pains' and emergency surgery.
Describing the incident as 'the most terrifying day I’ve ever had,' Katie shared details of her ordeal: 'The bit where they took my cervix and sealed it up ruptured, which basically meant my insides went rogue, with crippling abdominal pains, difficulty breathing, incredibly painful gas, blood like Moses parting the Red Sea, fluid, and even my bowel where it definitely didn’t belong.' She added that she 'nearly passed out from the pain.'
Emergency Surgery and Recovery
Rushed back to hospital, Katie underwent emergency surgery within 10 hours of admission. 'They had three plans for surgery, and two of them were huge,' she said. While the immediate crisis was resolved, doctors have informed her that another major operation is necessary.
Nick Knowles told the Daily Mail: 'I’ve been looking after my wife a lot because she has been through it. She’s had a lot of tough times. She's got another operation coming up.' He added: 'I will disappear for a while because I'll be looking after her. I'm always worried [about her], but she's a warrior and a fighter, so I know she'll be fine.'
Couple's Journey
Nick and Katie began dating in 2021 after meeting through their children at a play centre. They got engaged in 2023 and married on June 7 last year at Braxted Park, Essex. Katie's hysterectomy complications occurred just weeks after their wedding, adding emotional strain to their first year of marriage.
Despite the challenges, Katie has remained resilient, though she admitted working the day after her hysterectomy 'clearly didn't help.' The couple now faces another period of recovery, with Nick stepping away from his TV commitments to provide full-time care.
