Kenton Hall Care Home, on Kenton Lane in Newcastle, has celebrated its 30th anniversary with residents, staff, families and special guests. The party was attended by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Councillor Henry Gallagher, and the Lady Mayoress.
The milestone was particularly significant for the Handa family, who have owned Kenton Hall throughout its three decades as a purpose-built care home. Ninety-eight-year-old Mr Handa Senior, a special guest, played a hands-on role in the design and development of the facility 30 years ago.
History dating back to 1841
The history of Kenton Hall can be traced back hundreds of years. It is recorded on an estate plan from 1841 and is thought to have originated as a farmhouse or a house connected to the local colliery. Historical records show a shipowner lived there in 1861 and a barrister in 1881, before Newcastle City Council acquired the property in 1948.
Today, Kenton Hall provides residential, nursing, palliative and respite care, with residents supported to maintain their independence and individuality.
Celebrating continuity and care
Steve Massey, operations manager at Solehawk, which operates Kenton Hall, said: “Thirty years is a tremendous milestone for Kenton Hall and it was wonderful to celebrate it with our residents, their families, our colleagues and friends of the home.
“What makes this anniversary particularly special is the continuity behind Kenton Hall. The Handa family has been involved throughout those 30 years, with Mr Handa Senior taking a very personal interest in the original design of the purpose-built home.
“Buildings and care have changed enormously over three decades, but the principle at the heart of Kenton Hall has remained the same and that is creating a place where people are cared for with dignity, compassion and respect, and where they can truly feel at home.
“We were delighted that the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress could join us to recognise the anniversary and share such an important occasion with everyone at Kenton Hall.”

Speaking at the event, Councillor Henry Gallagher, Lord Mayor of Newcastle, said: “I was delighted to help the wonderful Kenton Hall celebrate Its 30th anniversary. It’s an absolutely fantastic place which I have a personal connection with and I am honoured to be here today.”
