Messi hints at retirement in emotional tribute to late father

Lionel Messi has written an emotional message following the death of his father, Jorge, last week, and the post includes a hint that he could soon retire from football.

Jorge Messi died at the age of 68 in a hospital in Rosario, Argentina, following a lengthy health battle. He played a key role in shaping his son's career, having acted as the former Barcelona star's agent from the beginning.

Emotional tribute on Instagram

Messi attended the funeral in his hometown, Rosario, and posted a letter on social media to pay tribute to his dad. The letter contained a passage that read: "I don't know what I'm going to do without you; I don't know how to move forward. I only played football, and now I have serious doubts that I'll keep doing it for much longer. You were by my side from the very beginning, and we were so close to the end. Why couldn't you hold on just a little longer so we could finish together?"

In a separate post on Instagram, Messi wrote: "I love you, Dad," accompanied by a photo of himself alongside his father.

World Cup final defeat and Ronaldo's message

Messi recently helped Argentina reach the final of the World Cup, where they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain at MetLife Stadium on July 19. The tournament was the fourth World Cup of Messi's career, and there have been suggestions it could be the final time the 39-year-old features in the competition.

Cristiano Ronaldo sent a message to Messi by commenting on the Inter Miami star's post on Instagram. Ronaldo wrote: "A huge hug to you and yours in these tough times, Leo. Much strength."

Gratitude for support

Messi also posted on his Instagram story to thank those who have offered support. He wrote: "I want to sincerely thank everyone for the love, respect, and immense consideration you showed my family and me during this painful time following my father's passing. Thank you for being there for us, for every message, every gesture, and above all, for respecting our grief and our privacy."
