Martin Roberts has revealed he would love Hollywood star Meryl Streep to present Homes Under the Hammer alongside him. The 63-year-old presenter, who has fronted the BBC property show for more than two decades, even wants to see the Oscar-winning actress get stuck into property development itself.
Renovating a Welsh pub
Martin is currently renovating a derelict pub in the Rhondda Valley in Wales for a new documentary series, hoping to create a hub for the local community and nearby tourism. But he admitted the project has not gone smoothly, confessing he has broken every rule from his own show.
"I've broken every single one of my Homes Under the Hammer rules," he told The Daily Star. "I didn't read the legal packet, I didn't get a surveyor in and I didn't visit it beforehand."
"But oh my gosh, a derelict old pub that's not been touched in 150 years has thrown up more problems than I ever could have imagined. But anyway we're getting through them."
Bold plans for the pub
The property star beamed as he shared his plans for the pub, with each room set to be modelled after a different TV show. This includes a Homes Under the Hammer room that will be "full of memorabilia".
He admitted that currently the pub is just "a pile of rubble", but the project is expected to help young and disadvantaged kids gain real-world experience in working in property. The pub is not expected to open for at least another year.
Meryl Streep's love for the show
Martin also opened up on his shock at discovering that huge stars such as Paul McCartney and Mark Wahlberg are big fans of the show. During an interview with Graham Norton, Hollywood legend Meryl Streep admitted Homes Under the Hammer is one of her favourite British shows.
Martin was quick to suggest she could make a guest appearance. "I would love to have Meryl Streep join us!" he said. "Can you imagine Meryl Streep in a two-up two-down terrace in Stoke-on-Trent? Especially if she wears her Devil Wears Prada gear!"
"She strolls up in her high heels and I'm in my scruffs and we wander around some derelict property," he added. "That would be brilliant, we need to try and arrange it!"
