Martin Clunes has sparked speculation about a possible Doc Martin comeback with a one-word response during a podcast appearance. The actor, who last played the grumpy GP in 2022, did not rule out returning for a future Christmas Special.
Fans left hopeful
On Gyles Brandreth's Rosebud podcast, Clunes was asked if the show was truly over or if there could be more episodes. He replied simply: "Maybe."
The show concluded with a Christmas Special in 2022 after 18 years and 10 series on ITV. Producers had previously said the decision to end was to prevent the show from becoming stale.
Film possibility
Clunes, 64, has also mentioned the potential for a Doc Martin feature film. He said: "There was talk from one of the movie distributors about making a film version of Doc Martin, and my answer at the moment, two years on from finishing the 10th and final series, is never say never - it could happen."
US version
Meanwhile, an American adaptation titled Best Medicine premiered earlier this year. It follows Dr Martin Best, a Boston surgeon who develops a blood phobia and moves to a small fishing village in Maine. Clunes appears in the show as the main character's father, alongside Josh Charles, whom he praised as "really good."
Clunes has been busy with other projects, including a role in Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights adaptation and playing Huw Edwards in Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards.
Family life
In a separate interview, Clunes spoke about his daughter Emily leaving home to study equine veterinary nursing. He admitted: "I miss her. She left home." Asked if he was a good dad, he said: "You'd have to ask her. I think I am, yes. I'm doting, adoring."
