Martin Clunes has hinted that Doc Martin could return, four years after the show ended. When asked about a possible Christmas Special, he replied simply: "Maybe."
End of an Era
The popular ITV series concluded with a Christmas Special in 2022, ending an 18-year run. The show followed the grumpy GP who moves to a Cornish village. Clunes and the production team decided to end the series to avoid it becoming tired after 10 series and a film.
Future Possibilities
Speaking on Gyles Brandreth's Rosebud podcast, Clunes didn't rule out a comeback. He also mentioned previous talks about a feature-length Doc Martin film. "There was talk from one of the movie distributors about making a film version of Doc Martin, and my answer at the moment, two years on from finishing the 10th and final series, is never say never - it could happen," he said.
US Adaptation
Fans can also watch an American adaptation, Best Medicine, which launched this year. It stars Josh Charles as Dr Martin Best, a Boston surgeon who develops a fear of blood and moves to a small fishing village in Maine. Clunes appears in the show as the main character's father. "I guest as his father. But he's great, Josh Charles plays the doctor and he's really good. And it's sort of, it's all in Upstate New York. It's weird as hell," he said.
Other Projects
Clunes has been busy with other roles, including a supporting part in Emerald Fennell's adaptation of Wuthering Heights and portraying Huw Edwards in Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards. He has also spoken about his personal life, saying "I miss her" after his daughter Emily left home to study equine veterinary nursing. Asked about his parenting, he said: "You'd have to ask her. I think I am, yes. I'm doting, adoring."
