The ITV series Long Lost Family, hosted by Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell, aims to reunite family members after years of separation. While the show delivers both devastating and heartwarming moments, some stories end in tragedy. Here is a look at some of the most tragic scenes aired on the programme.
Reunion Ends in Tragedy
In a recent episode aired on August 24, viewers met Natasha Carr, who was abandoned in a toilet at St. Thomas' Hospital in 1989 at just a week old. Natasha first appeared on the show in 2018, when she was successfully reunited with her full sister Lee-Ann after three years of searching. Lee-Ann was also found in the staff toilets at St. James' Hospital when she was a few days old.
The separated sisters finally reunited in 2022. Davina was forced to tell the sisters that their biological father had sadly died a few years before the show aired, off-camera. The father had been brought up in Jamaica until he was 14 years old and died from cancer.
Davina said on the programme: “I'm on my way to give Natasha and Lee-Ann major information; sadly, their birth father has died, which we've told them away from the cameras.”
Reunion Heartache
In 2018, the Long Lost Family team took on the case of Pearse Egan, who grew up in the Republic of Ireland with single mum Anne. A 17-year-old Anne met Pearse's father, Eddie Santos, whilst he was a security guard in New York. Shortly after falling pregnant, Anne decided to move back to Northern Ireland to have Pearse, meaning that until 2018, Eddie had never met his son.
But in a tragic turn of events, Pearse describes that following their first meeting, it has been difficult to build a relationship as Eddie has had both a heart attack and contracted coronavirus. He says that he has been to New York “three or four times” since he first met his father and is doing his utmost to slowly build a relationship with him.
Devastating Death
In 2020, Long Lost Family featured the story of Simon Jeffrey, who'd been abandoned as a baby in a wooden box back in 1963. Mavis Gordon discovered him in the ladies' toilets of a pub in Kent and, as a result, saved his life. As the team attempted to track down his family, he read in a newspaper clipping that Mavis had found him in the box all those years ago.
Once the episode finished, an ITV announcer revealed that Mavis had sadly died since filming took place: "Sadly, since filming, Mavis Gordon who found Simon Jeffrey as a baby has passed away. Our thoughts are with her family." It was more heartbreak for Simon. It turned out that he had six older siblings, but two had passed away along with his biological parents.
Shock Discovery
During a 2022 episode, the ITV show followed a story about a man called Roy, who attempted to track down his birth mother after making a shock discovery. He grew up with his Jamaican dad, Eccleston, and his British mum, Joan. Roy had a happy upbringing, but when signing papers to join the Navy, he needed his birth certificate. He soon discovered his mum was not his birth mother.
His dad explained that a woman called Janet had given birth to him, and Eccleston had been in a relationship with her as a young man. He did not want to give Roy up, but Joan's parents were concerned about a young, interracial couple raising a child. Roy said he did not want to start looking for Janet until Joan was no longer with him, out of "respect" for the woman who raised him. Sadly, this meant he was too late, as he discovered his birth mother had died just months after he started his search. Joan died in 2013, and it took a long time for Roy to start his search.
