John McEnroe's BBC Wimbledon Fee: Daily Rate and Pay Cut Revealed
John McEnroe's BBC Wimbledon Fee: Daily Rate and Pay Cut

John McEnroe will return to the BBC for this year's Wimbledon and is expected to take home a sizeable fee for his work. The tennis icon, who won three men's singles titles at SW19, has been a mainstay of the BBC's coverage for more than two decades after joining the broadcaster's punditry team in 2004.

McEnroe's Daily Rate and Pay Cut

According to the BBC's annual accounts for 2023-24, McEnroe received between £195,000 and £199,999 for his broadcasting work during that period. Given that he only works for the BBC during Wimbledon, that fee translates to a healthy daily rate of around £14,000, making him the broadcaster's highest-paid employee pro-rata. However, it appears the tennis great has since taken a pay cut. His name did not feature in the BBC's most recent salary report, covering the 2024-25 financial year, indicating his remuneration fell below the £178,000 disclosure threshold.

Historical Earnings and Public Reaction

This marks a significant fall from the 2022-23 period, when the seven-time Grand Slam champion pocketed an eye-watering fee of between £205,000 and £209,999, the highest amount he has ever received from the BBC. The disclosure of McEnroe's earnings previously caused a stir, with some viewers questioning whether such a substantial sum was justified. But several of his BBC colleagues quickly rushed to his defence.

Colleagues Defend McEnroe's Value

Writing in her 2024 autobiography, former Wimbledon presenter Sue Barker said: “Mac is the BBC’s highest-paid employee pro rata, and with good reason. The public love him. He was great to work with, always up for fun.” Andrew Castle, who recently revealed that he will be dropped by the BBC after this year’s Wimbledon, also came out in support of McEnroe. “John is a wonderfully, funny and well-weathered guy,” he told Globusbet last year. “I can tell you this, when he is into a match and is concentrating and is engaged whilst enjoying it, there is no one to match. It’s a thrill to sit there and listen to what he has to say.”

Future Disclosure

The BBC’s annual salary report is usually published in mid-July, meaning tennis fans will have to wait until after Wimbledon to discover whether McEnroe’s earnings remained below the £178,000 threshold for the 2025/26 accounting period.
