John Cena, the 49-year-old wrestling legend turned actor, has shared the dramatic results of his second follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant, stating that he felt compelled to undergo the procedure after being "bullied" by fans. The 17-time world champion posted on social media alongside cosmetic surgeon Ken Anderson, pioneer of the FUE technique, announcing he had gone "all in" for the best possible results.
Cena's Hair Transplant Journey
Cena underwent his first hair transplant in November 2024, following years of attempts to conceal his hair loss. He said he became self-conscious after his appearance was continually mocked by wrestling fans. In his latest post, he wrote: "Round 2 of FUE Treatment and this time I went all in for the best possible results. Thank you @KenAndersonMD and the staff at Anderson Center for Hair for accompanying me on this journey!"
Ken Anderson responded: "Always great seeing you, my friend. Your commitment to the process and long-term hair health has made all the difference. I'm grateful for the trust you've placed in me and my team, and honored to continue being part of your journey."
Fan Reactions
Fans praised Cena for his openness about the procedure. One wrote: "Nice that Cena is open about this, good to normalise. I hope every man who needs hair gets the help they need!" Another said: "Cool that actors are finally being honest about this stuff." A third commented: "Nah, John Cena really said 'If you want something done right, go all in' and lived it. Absolute legend for committing to the process like this!"
Bullying Admission
Speaking last year on The Pat McAfee Show, Cena opened up about the "straight-up bullying" he endured from WWE fans over his appearance. He said: "You chant, and you make me feel small, and you embarrass me… Y'all don't know what that's like. That is straight-up bullying. That's just not cool. I don't like it." He added: "So, thank you for bullying me into getting surgical hair replacement. That's how far y'all push me."
Cena explained his hair loss was due to a "genetic condition" out of his control, and age also played a part. In an interview with People magazine, he reflected on signs fans held at events: "I saw their signs that said 'The bald John Cena.' They pushed me into going to see what my options were."
Hair Care Routine and Statistics
Cena now follows a routine including red-light therapy, minoxidil, vitamins, shampoo, and conditioner, in addition to the transplant. He stated: "I hate the fact that if there wasn't so much shame around it, I'd have gotten it done 10 years ago. I thought I was alone, but seven or eight out of 10 [men] suffer from thinning or baldness."
An FUE hair transplant moves follicles from the back of the scalp (donor area) to balding or thinning areas (recipient area). Because the relocated hair is resistant to hair loss, it will start to grow normally.
