Comedian Joe Lycett, a contestant on this year's Celebrity Traitors, has announced he will put money behind the bar at 30 pubs across the UK, including two in Manchester, on Friday 16 October.
The move is intended to show further support for British pubs and encourage more people to visit their local watering holes. Lycett announced the news on his Channel 4 programme, Love From The Lycett Arms, which aired on Friday night (9 October).
Pubs selected in Manchester
The Old Monkey on Portland Street and The Peveril of The Peak on Great Bridgewater Street have been selected in Greater Manchester. The Old Monkey is just two miles away from Joseph Holt brewery, which supplies its beers. This much-loved pub serves a large selection of lagers, real ales, craft beers, wines and spirits, as well as cocktails.
The Peveril of the Peak has played an instrumental role in Manchester since first opening its doors in around 1820. The Grade II-listed pub is best-recognised for its green-tiled exterior and also features a number of surviving interior features from the Victorian era. Once hailed by the Campaign for Real Ale group (CAMRA) for being of 'outstanding national historic importance', The Pev was, this summer, placed in the top spot of Time Out's Best Pubs in the UK list.
Support for British boozers
Speaking about British pubs during the show, Joe said: “I do want to talk about pub closures, it’s a serious problem, up and down the UK. British pubs are closing at a rate of two a day and it’s very sad.”
Other pubs on the list were selected by Joe's celebrity pals including fellow Faithful and Coronation Street legend Julie Hesmondhalgh, who selected The Crown in her hometown of Accrington. Another former Corrie star, Adam Rickitt, who played Nick Tilsley on the cobbles from 1997 to 1999, and later returned from 2002 until 2004, owns his own bar in Knutsford. Run alongside his wife Katy, Dexter & Jones offers more than 800 different craft beers, 10 draft beers, and more than 300 small batch gins and more than 200 different wines. They also boast an innovative Pegas Craft Tap System, so you can take away any of the draft beers to enjoy at home.
The money is expected to be behind the pub bars on Friday 16, though no specific time has been clarified.
