Jesy Nelson in Tears as Twins Diagnosed with SMA in Documentary
Jesy Nelson Cries Over Twins' SMA Diagnosis in Doc

Jesy Nelson, former Little Mix star, was reduced to tears when she learned her twin daughters had been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a moment captured for her upcoming documentary Jesy Nelson: Life Changing. The Amazon Prime Video cameras recorded her reaction as doctors confirmed the test results were positive. According to the NHS, SMA is a rare genetic condition causing muscle weakness that worsens over time.

Emotional Reaction and Determination

In the footage, Nelson is seen with her head in her hands, saying: "I don't know how I'm going to do this. I feel like I'm going to be heartbroken for the rest of my life." Despite her devastation, she expressed determination to change laws and regulations surrounding SMA testing, refusing to let others share her pain. She has been updating followers on her twins' condition as the documentary prepares to air later this month.

Documentary Trailer and Call to Action

In the trailer's caption, Nelson wrote: "I urge everyone to watch this documentary. It's the most heartbreaking series I've ever had to make, but it's one that needed to be made if we're ever going to see real change." She highlighted the daily struggles her daughters face and stressed the importance of early diagnosis through the heel prick test. She concluded: "No future babies born with SMA should have lives that look like this. 'Jesy Nelson: Life Changing' streams on Prime Video from July 17th."

Parliamentary Campaign and Petition

Last month, Nelson was in Parliament as MPs debated testing all newborns for SMA. She partnered with the Mirror on a petition signed by over 150,000 people demanding universal screening. Scotland introduced screening in March, but England's rollout is limited. Nelson expressed frustration after public health minister Sharon Hodgson defended the staggered launch. "I cannot believe we are still debating this. You are basically telling me that if you live in a certain postcode, you're not as important. It's outrageous," Nelson said. The minister cited limited testing facilities as the reason for the partial rollout.

Late Diagnosis and Irreversible Damage

Nelson revealed that her one-year-old twins' late diagnosis meant they began treatment too late after irreversible nerve damage had occurred. She has since been told they will never walk. Jesy Nelson: Life Changing will stream on Prime Video from July 17.
