I told my date I had feelings – his reply devastated me

A woman has shared the moment she told her date she had feelings for him, only for his response to leave her devastated.

Writing anonymously for Metro.co.uk's 'So, How Did It Go?' series, she described how she and Nico had been texting for a year before they finally met in person. The date ended with her confession – and his reply: 'Let's talk about it in the morning.'

A promising start

The pair first met in 2025 when Nico came to view an en-suite room in her three-bed flatshare. She had advertised on SpareRoom, looking for someone extroverted and friendly. His profile stood out for being warm, and when he arrived, she found him attractive and quick-witted. The viewing ran over as they flirted, and they hugged goodbye.

They stayed in touch, texting occasionally, until she invited him to a supper-club-style dinner party last summer. He impressed her and her friends by making brownies and helping host. From then on, they made plans to hang out and texted more frequently.

The confession

A month before their date, they listened to music at his place, and she realised she was nervous at the thought of their knees brushing. That's when she knew she had caught feelings. She invited him round for dinner to see if there was a genuine connection.

The evening was romantic – a Mediterranean spread, playful teasing, and a kiss on the balcony. They ended up making out until almost 3:00am. As she saw him out, she said: 'I need to tell you something: I have feelings for you.' He paused, then replied: 'Let's talk about it in the morning.'

The aftermath

She didn't hear from Nico in the morning. When he finally messaged a few days later, his text was along the lines of 'I'm not looking for a relationship, just something casual.' She replied that confessing her feelings wasn't loaded with the expectation of a relationship.

Their closeness dwindled. A spontaneous invitation the following weekend felt different – they didn't hook up, and she barely heard from him after. About a month later, he messaged saying they shouldn't see each other anymore because they wanted different things, and that he couldn't give her what she deserved.

Now, she says she doesn't feel bad or angry. The encounter taught her that good chemistry is not the same as compatibility or emotional readiness. She's glad she stayed true to herself and wore her heart on her sleeve.
