Hayden Panettiere, known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, has died at the age of 36, just three months after releasing her tell-all memoir. Her family confirmed her death, describing her as an “incredible light and a force of nature” who brought joy to those who knew her and the millions who watched her on screen. No cause of death has been confirmed.
A childhood of pressure and 'grooming'
Panettiere began appearing in adverts before her first birthday and was working consistently on television by age four. In one of her final interviews, conducted before the publication of her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning in May, she revealed she had been "groomed" to comply and perform.
"I was like a little soldier and I always have been," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "No was never an option. It was just, here are your scenes, here's your dialogue, memorise it, hit the marks, do what your director tells you to do. I took my marching orders."
She explained that the constant pressure turned her into a people-pleaser who put herself last and ultimately started "self-harming in the form of substance abuse". "My life revolved around other people, and I lived to make other people happy," she revealed.
Abuse and betrayal
Panettiere also alleged mistreatment by a friend she had "grown to trust". During a podcast appearance on On Purpose with Jay Shetty, she described an incident at age 18 when she was on a boat with friends. She claimed someone she regarded as a "protector" lured her downstairs into a "very small" room where an undressed, famous man was waiting. "I had nowhere to hide. And I bolted and I hid wherever I could think of to hide on a boat," she recalled.
She described it as a "horrifying event" and said the "betrayal" from her supposed friend caused even greater pain.
Family tragedy and motherhood
In 2023, her brother Jansen Panettiere died suddenly from aortic valve complications and an undiagnosed enlarged heart at age 28. Hayden told People that she put on weight due to the emotional strain. "When I lost him, I felt like I lost half of my soul... I will always be heartbroken about [him], I will never be able to get over it," she said.
Panettiere leaves behind a daughter, Kaya, born in 2014 during her relationship with Ukrainian former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko. In 2018, she transferred full custody of Kaya to Klitschko, later admitting she struggled with alcohol and drug addiction and post-partum depression. On Red Table Talk in 2022, she said signing the custody papers was "the most heartbreaking thing I've ever, ever had to do in my life".
