Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly "desperate" to win back the British public after returning to the UK with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, at the end of August. The couple moved back six years after stepping down as working royals and relocating to Montecito, California.
Speculation over the Sussexes' return
Questions remain over why the couple decided to return to the UK. Some have suggested they failed to make it in Hollywood, while others have claimed they may have run out of money.
However, News24 contributor Sophie Elsworth believes the real reason is that the Sussexes are "desperate" to win back the British public, but warned that rebuilding their relationship with the UK public will be far from easy.
"Harry and Meghan are still very much on the outer here in Britain. They've come back because, I believe, they are desperate to try and win back the British public. They've got a long way to be doing that," she said.
Low profile and a possible meeting with the King
Elsworth noted that the couple have been seen out and about a little bit in the Cotswolds, but there has not been a lot of media coverage of them. They have largely been keeping a low profile, but in recent days there are reports that they have scheduled a meeting with the King ahead of Christmas.
"It will be very interesting to see if Meghan and Harry and their two children roll up at Sandringham for that famous Christmas gathering with the royals because as we know, William and Harry sadly do not speak," she added.
Public reaction
Elsworth added: "A long way to go for the Sussexes but they are definitely trying to win back the British public and the favour of the Royal Family."
News24 viewers echoed this assessment, with many convinced that there is no way back for the couple. One commented: "There's absolutely no way that they will win back the British public. The sooner they realise that the better. They are definitely fighting a losing battle. The called us racist, we will never forgive that."
"Not a rats chance in hell," added a second, as a third agreed: "Not happening. They are just not worth bothering about. They are not Royals and they have not earned any respect with the horrible way they behaved."
Another scathing assessment of the couple read: "It's a losing game, they might as well give up. The majority of the public despise the narcissistic egotistical entitled grifters, they'll never be forgiven."
