Former England youth footballer James Walker dies at 38

Former England youth international James Walker has died at the age of 38, his former club Southend United has confirmed. Walker, who came through Charlton Athletic's academy, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in 2019 that left him with physical and mental impairments.

Career and clubs

Walker represented England at under-17 level and played for Leyton Orient, Southend United, Hartlepool United, Bristol Rovers, Notts County, Yeovil Town and Gillingham during his career. At Southend, he made 54 appearances between 2008 and 2010, scoring eight goals.

In a statement, Southend United said: "Southend United is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player James Walker at the age of 38. James made 54 appearances between 2008 and 2010 for the Shrimpers, scoring eight goals."

The statement added: "A product of Charlton Athletic’s academy, James also represented the likes of Hartlepool United, Bristol Rovers, Leyton Orient, Notts County, Yeovil Town and Gillingham, before suffering a massive cardiac arrest in 2019 which resulted in significant physical and mental impairments."

Benefit match and applause

In May 2023, Southend United Ex-Player Association (SUEPA) organised a benefit match to raise funds for Walker's recovery. Steve Tilson and Paul Brush led a Southend United Legends team for the match.

The club confirmed: "On Saturday we will be conducting a minutes applause in his honour ahead of kick-off. Rest in peace, James."
