A Scottish farmer broke down in tears after discovering her favourite cow had died unexpectedly. Zara Lindsay, who appears on the BBC's This Farming Life, found the cow, Tilt, lying dead on the ground while her calf ran nearby.
Shocking discovery on Arran farm
Zara and her husband Callum moved to a hillside farm on the Isle of Arran in 2023 with their two daughters. They care for a herd of 35 cows, which are featured on the programme. In an episode aired in February 2026, Zara noticed Tilt was missing and found her dead.
"The worst thing is, she was absolutely fine," Zara told the cameras, visibly emotional. "Her calf is running about, quite happy...obviously not been dead that long."
Emotional impact and financial blow
Zara said the loss "hit different" because Tilt was a family favourite. "I don't even know why I'm crying," she said. "It happens all the time, but it sometimes just hits different when it's certain cows."
Callum was shocked when Zara called him to break the news. "We have a bit of a disaster," she warned. "Tilt is dead." He replied bluntly, "No," before agreeing to move the body.
Zara explained that replacing a good breeding cow could cost "£3,000-plus," calling it "a bit of a blow." She added, "It's not just a loss financially as well. We have only got 35 cows, you build a relationship with your cows as well, they are almost part of your family."
Past challenges and recovery
The family has faced difficulties since their move. Five months into their tenancy, Callum suffered a quad bike accident that left him with life-changing injuries. He is back working full-time but has learned to manage his recovery.
Speaking to Farmstrong Scotland, Callum said: "If I have a big day, the tiredness is still there. But I'm more settled within myself now, more positive about where I am. The farm is more active as a business and we're moving forward, that does a lot for your wellbeing."
