Fans vote against Harry and Meghan moving into Royal Lodge

A Daily Express poll has revealed that 95 percent of readers believe the King should not offer Prince Harry and Meghan Markle the option to live at Royal Lodge in Windsor.

The couple returned to the UK in August after six years in America and are thought to be living in a rented home in the Cotswolds with their two children. They stepped away from royal duties in early 2020, weeks before moving stateside.

Poll results

The poll ran between 6.15pm on October 9 and 6.15pm on October 16. Of the 4,447 fans who voted, 95 percent said the King should not offer the couple the home, 4 percent said they should be offered it, and 1 percent were unsure.

King Charles said in a statement last month that the couple will continue to live as non-working royals and should be treated as "private citizens with commercial and charitable interests". Their new life means they still do not have access to royal property.

Reader reactions

One fan commented: "No, absolutely not. He's only recently got his brother out of Royal Lodge and it would be a huge mistake to let those two get their foot in the door..." Another added: "Absolutely not," whilst another said: "That's a ridiculous notion."

Royal Lodge, a Grade-II royal property, was the former home of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson, who moved out at the start of the year. Since Andrew moved out, it has been sitting empty, with its future still unknown.

Previous home at Frogmore Cottage

Harry and Meghan previously lived at Frogmore Cottage, a property on the Windsor Castle estate, which was a wedding present from the late Queen Elizabeth II. Harry wrote about their love for the home in his 2023 memoir Spare: "We loved that place. From the first minute. It felt as if we were destined to live there."

The property was Prince Archie's first home, where the family lived when he was born in May 2019.

It was reported last week that the King paid Andrew's £1.5million repair bill on Royal Lodge, with Andrew now having officially handed back the keys. The repair bill was needed as Andrew reportedly left parts of the home in need of repair. Andrew now resides on the Sandringham estate, whilst Sarah is thought to be living in a rented six-bedroom gated property in the Home Counties in England.
