Falmouth tops list of most independent seaside towns in UK

Falmouth in Cornwall has been named the UK's most independent seaside town, with 76.9% of its high street shops independently owned, according to new research from Simply Sea Views. The study ranked towns based on how much their high streets are made up of locally owned businesses, and Falmouth scored 88.5 out of 100, beating popular destinations like Margate and Whitby.

Thriving local scene

For those who live in or frequent Falmouth, the result comes as no surprise. The town is known for its thriving local produce, creativity, and entrepreneurship. Its Old High Street is celebrated for its bohemian feel, packed with century-old buildings and hidden paths offering views out to the sea. Along the street, independent businesses sit alongside a few big-branded high street staples, including Falmouth Bookseller, Parade Store for women's clothing, Ludgate House Antiques, Beacon Coffee Shop, and Starglazers Pottery Painting Cafe.

The town's café culture is a major draw. Beacon Coffee has been listed among some of the best coffee shops in the UK. A recent Google review said: "It's a lovely gem with lovely, welcoming, personable owners. For the quality of coffee this place serves, it comes with heart and soul, which I sometimes find is lacking with other 'hipster/modern/new wave' coffee shops." Other standout spots include Forty Five Falmouth, which holds a five-star rating on Google, and Dark Pony Coffee, which one customer called "a genuine and pleasant surprise".

High ratings and independent businesses

According to the data, Falmouth's customer ratings across every category sit between 4.53 and 4.75 out of five, reflecting high visitor satisfaction. The town's cafes are particularly strong, with 95.1% independently owned. Restaurants follow closely, with 93.2% independent, and pubs at 94.7%.

St Ives took second place nationally, with Cornwall dominating the top spots. However, the county also has the lowest contender in the study: Newquay, less than 30 miles down the coast, has the lowest proportion of independent shops of any town in the study at 34%. Padstow, known for its vibrant food scene, ranks lowest for independent restaurants among Cornwall towns at 70%.

Overall, Falmouth stands out as the best destination for locally made, crafted, and sourced experiences, from shopping to dining.
