Richard Eckersley, a former Manchester United academy prospect, has revealed he regrets leaving Old Trafford too early in his career. The former right-back made his first-team debut in January 2009 and went on to make four total appearances for his boyhood club.
Early Promise at Old Trafford
Eckersley rose through the club's academy ranks, inspired by the many Carrington graduates in Sir Alex Ferguson's squad. He earned a League Cup winners' medal after being named on the bench for the 2009 final, with Ferguson including the defender after he impressed against Manchester City's reserves shortly before the Wembley showdown.
Discussing his decision to leave United for newly-promoted Burnley in 2009, Eckersley told the Manchester Evening News in 2024: "I think the decision to leave United was probably too early for me. I think I probably should have stayed on and developed at Carrington under the coaches that I was already working with, because I was making steady progress."
A Difficult Transition
Eckersley was competing for a place in a United team that won the Premier League, the League Cup and reached the Champions League final during his sole year with the first team. He struggled in his new surroundings at Burnley.
"It was a huge shift from where I was at United and the standards that we were setting with professionalism, the facilities and all the kinds of things that we had," he continued. "You were basically looked after to the nth degree. Then going somewhere like Burnley - and no disrespect to Burnley - they were just in a different headspace."
The full-back played just four times for Burnley in his two-and-a-half-year stint, with loan spells at Plymouth Argyle, Bradford City, Bury and Toronto, whom he joined permanently. He later signed for New York Red Bulls and briefly returned to English football with Oldham Athletic before retiring aged 26.
A New Career in Devon
His retirement coincided with the birth of his daughter, emphasising his desire to spend time with his family. After a camper van trip to Totnes, he and his wife moved to the Devonshire town and opened Earth.Food.Love, the UK's first zero-waste shop. Eckersley also runs ReRooted, which produces plant milks.
Reflecting on his new career, Eckersley said: "I think that is the biggest thing: seeing their mum and their dad enjoying what they do. We're all intermingling and they are never more than five minutes away from me all the time. That is important for me."
