Ewan McGregor's Scottish BAFTA Tribute to Wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Ewan McGregor shares BAFTA with wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead

In a heartwarming display of affection and professional admiration, acclaimed actor Ewan McGregor dedicated his prestigious Scottish BAFTA award to his wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, during a glittering ceremony in Glasgow on Sunday.

A Glamorous Night and a Public Declaration

The 54-year-old Trainspotting and Star Wars star was the recipient of the Outstanding Contribution award from BAFTA Scotland. He arrived at the DoubleTree by Hilton venue looking every bit the proud Scot, dressed in a traditional kilt and sporran. The couple, who married in 2022, were the picture of love on the red carpet, sharing a passionate kiss before the proceedings began.

When he took to the podium to accept his award, McGregor's thoughts were immediately with his wife. He turned his acceptance speech into a public love letter and a professional plea, jokingly calling for more Scottish films they could star in together. From the stage, he told her, "I love to work with you so much. I've been lucky enough to do it three times, and I want to do it more and more." He added, "Mary and I are now here in Scotland, so to save us the pain of having to be apart, maybe you could come up with lots of Scottish films that we can be in together."

From Co-stars to Life Partners

The couple's journey together began on the set of the FX series Fargo in 2016. Both joined the cast for the show's third season, playing each other's love interests. At the time, McGregor was still married to Eve Mavrakis, with whom he shares four daughters, and Winstead was married to Riley Stearns.

After their respective marriages ended, the co-stars began a relationship. Their professional collaboration continued to flourish with roles in the 2020 superhero film Birds Of Prey and the 2024 historical drama series A Gentleman in Moscow. Their personal life also blossomed; they welcomed their first child together, a son named Laurie, in June 2021, and tied the knot in a private backyard ceremony in Los Angeles in April 2022.

A Family Affair at the BAFTAs

The evening was a family celebration in more ways than one. The award was presented to McGregor by his uncle, actor Denis Lawson, who famously played Wedge Antilles in the Star Wars franchise. Lawson described his nephew as an "extraordinarily versatile actor."

In return, McGregor paid a moving tribute to his uncle, crediting him as his "biggest inspiration" and the person who taught him what acting truly was. "I can't imagine anybody I would rather get this amazing award from than my uncle Denis," the emotional actor stated from the stage.

The ceremony also recognised other talents, including James McArdle, who received the Actor Film/Television award for his role in Four Mothers, and Saoirse Ronan, who was honoured with the Actress Film/Television award for her part in The Outrun.
