Emmerdale Fans Adore Serena Sugden But Plead for No Villain Twist

Emmerdale fans are already smitten with newcomer Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy) following her first appearance on Tuesday, June 23, but they have one major plea for the soap's producers: do not turn her into another villain. The character made a comedic entrance that led to a deeply emotional encounter with Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), who has been struggling after being sexually assaulted by Dr. Todd (Caroline Harker).

Serena's Debut and Impact on Charity

Charity, overwhelmed by the stalled police investigation and the secret of baby Leyla's true parentage, fled the village and stood by a lake in distress. Serena emerged from the trees, admitting she had been 'caught short,' and revealed she had previously worked as a Samaritan. She quickly sensed something was wrong and gently encouraged Charity to open up. Serena offered practical advice, pointing out that Caitlin Todd's blackmail proved the encounter was non-consensual. When Charity worried that taking evidence to the police would expose her baby secret, Serena argued that living a lie was no longer an option and seeking justice might be the best path. This resonated with Charity, who returned home to speak with Mack Boyd (Lawrence Robb) alone.

Fans' Hopes and Fears for Serena

As Serena made her way to Emmerdale village, fans voiced their hopes for her character. The previous Sugden addition, John Sugden, turned out to be an unhinged killer with a saviour complex. Viewers are desperate for Serena to be a breath of fresh air. Metro reader T'pol wrote on Facebook: 'Last night's episode was great, Emma Atkins as per usual played a blinder... hoping this new Sugden girl is going to be a nice person unlike John.' Val agreed: 'The new woman was nice hope she is going to be a part in Emmerdale and a good person for a change,' while Maureen added: 'I hope she's not more trouble for charity, hopefully she's there to help her.' On Twitter/X, Logan Smith (@TheDisneyDaddy_) posted: 'She's only appeared in one episode so far but I absolutely adore Serena already and hope she sticks around for a long time. She's a breath of fresh air so please don't make her a villain @emmerdale because we don't need two evil Sugden family members back to back.'

Suspicions and Teasers from the Actress

Not all fans are convinced Serena is entirely good. Metro reader Kirsty commented: 'I think this new Sugden will shake things up a bit... I have to say I really liked her in tonight's episode but will spell trouble going forward.' Claire (@claireh5611) tweeted: 'Love Serena already yet still suspicious of her! Charity unwittingly told a Sudgen about everything that had gone on including the baby secret!!' Actress Casey Al-Shaqsy has teased that viewers might end up hating Serena 'in the best way.' She explained: 'So Serena as a person, I'd say she puts her foot in her mouth quite a lot. She's quite loud and a little bit outspoken. I do think there's elements of both good and bad in her. She's come into a lovely family situation. Or is it lovely? You'll see.' She added: 'Let's just say she's going to be an incredible person to play, and hopefully you all love her or hate her in the [best] ways.'
