Efrain Juarez 'Offered' Celtic Assistant Role in Martin O'Neill Succession Plan
Efrain Juarez Offered Celtic Assistant Role in O'Neill Plan

Celtic have reportedly offered former defender Efrain Juarez a sensational return to the club as part of Martin O'Neill's backroom team. Sources in North America claim that Juarez will succeed the Irishman as head coach at Parkhead next year.

Juarez's Coaching Career

Juarez launched his coaching career as assistant to ex-Celtic boss Ronny Deila at New York City, Standard Liege, and Club Brugge. He later found success as a manager in his own right. The 38-year-old led Atletico Nacional, featuring Rangers hero Alfredo Morelos, to a league and cup double in Colombia in 2023 before returning to Mexico to manage Pumas.

Juarez, who stepped down from his role last week, previously played for Celtic in the 2010/11 season, making just 21 appearances before being sold.

O'Neill's Appointment and Succession Plan

O'Neill has been appointed permanent Hoops boss for the coming season after salvaging the 2025/26 campaign by delivering a Premiership and Scottish Cup double. Mexican outlet Juanfutbol claims O'Neill wants Juarez to join his coaching team ahead of the new season, with a view to taking over as manager in early 2027.

The report states Juarez, who was linked with the top job at Celtic last year, held a video call with club chiefs and has now been offered the role of assistant manager.

Backroom Staff Updates

Trusted lieutenants Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham worked alongside O'Neill during his two spells as interim boss last season. However, confirmation of their returns has reportedly been delayed by wage negotiations.

After his return as manager for the 2026/27 season, O'Neill, 74, praised both men, who played under him during his first tenure as Celtic boss in the early 2000s. He said: "Coming back after 20-odd years, whatever the case may be, I never thought this would ever happen. Totally and utterly surreal. And to be back in the dugout at Celtic Park after all those years. To see Shaun and Mark Fotheringham, two lads that I coached."
