BBC radio star Ed James has publicly defended Josh Widdicombe after the comedian faced criticism over his Strictly Come Dancing debut. In an Instagram post on Sunday, Ed urged fans to "be a little kinder" amid the backlash.
"Seeing lots of stuff about Josh today on social media and in news outlets," Ed wrote. "Wanted to share some thoughts, and I realise I'm adding to the problem here as I'm doing exactly what I'm about to suggest we don't do… but why is he getting a hard time?"

Ed continued: "It's a TV show?! If you didn't like him, switch off! Why feel the need to go online and give him a harsh time? He's a great presenter, doing a massive job and was bound to have been bloody nervous."
"He'll be just fine, so will SCD, as it's a brilliant show. Not sure how going online and having a go at him helps anyone… least of all Josh, who's just trying to do the best job he can on one of the biggest platforms in the UK."
Support from celebrities and fans
Ed concluded: "Can we be a little kinder? And if you are tempted to open up social media and join the pile on, go to the gym, have a glass of wine, spend some time outside and hopefully realise this really isn't something to get all worked up about!"
Following Ed's post, the radio star was inundated with supportive comments. Actress Tamzin Outhwaite wrote: "He is BRILLIANT and perfect on Strictly." Broadcaster Dame Denise Lewis added: "Well said, Ed." Katie Piper and Gabby Logan also shared their support with clapping and raising hands emojis.
Ed's followers weighed in too. One commented: "LOVE Josh!! He hasn’t been given a chance. I also think he’d be so good upstairs," referring to Strictly's 'Clauditorium'. Another said: "I think he’s great! I don’t understand what people’s problem is with any of them!" A third declared: "He’s brilliant! I was worried about the changes, but Strictly is in safe hands! Josh made his debut alongside Emma Willis and Johannes Radebe in the season 24 launch show, but has faced criticism in recent weeks.
