Dame Penelope Keith, the beloved British actress best known for her roles in classic sitcoms The Good Life and To The Manor Born, has died at the age of 86 following a battle with cancer.

Family Statement Confirms Peaceful Passing

Her family confirmed that she died "peacefully" at her home in Surrey, where she had lived for more than 50 years. In a statement to The Standard, they said: "We are deeply saddened to announce that Dame Penelope Keith died peacefully whilst living with cancer at her home in Surrey where she had lived for more than 50 years. The family is grateful for the care and support she received throughout her treatments, and ask that their privacy be respected at this time."

Iconic Roles and Career Highlights

Keith rose to fame in 1975 playing Margo Leadbetter, the socially ambitious and snobbish neighbour in the BBC sitcom The Good Life. The role earned her a BAFTA for Best Comedy Performer. She later starred as the widowed aristocrat Audrey fforbes-Hamilton in To The Manor Born, which aired from 1979 to 1981.

Born on April 2, 1940, Keith began her acting career on stage in the 1960s before transitioning to television in the 1970s, becoming a household name.

Personal Life and Marriage

She shared her 17th-century home, Mousehill Manor in Milford, Surrey, with her husband Rodney Timpson, a former detective who later became her manager. The couple married in 1976, six months after meeting while Keith was performing in a theatre in Chichester, where Timpson was conducting security checks. They adopted two young brothers. Reflecting on her marriage in 2010, Keith said: "We've been married 33 years, and they all said we wouldn't last. He likes looking after me and I enjoy that."

Keith is survived by her husband and their two sons. The family has requested privacy during this time.
