Countryfile presenter John Craven has spoken candidly about the difficulties he encountered while filming the beloved BBC farming programme throughout the years.
The 85-year-old has fronted the popular BBC rural affairs show for an impressive 37 years, having first taken the helm in 1989.
In a recent interview with Farmers' Guardian, John reflected on the early days of filming Countryfile, revealing how challenging it was to persuade farmers to speak on camera.
He said: "In the very early days of Countryfile, it was very difficult to get cameras onto farms and to get farmers to speak to us. It took a long time to win farmers over and let them open the gates of the farm and let us in."
John noted that farmers are nowadays far more receptive and willing to share their stories, adding: "We need to up the amount of food that is produced in this country. The balance between environmental concern and the need to produce more food, that is the big issue that faces the country today."
A Stalwart of British Television
A fixture on British television for over five decades, John remains a widely recognised household name throughout the UK. He first appeared on screens presenting a children's discussion programme called Search, in which enthusiastic youngsters voiced their opinions.
In 1972, he went on to front the BBC's first news programme created exclusively for children, John Craven's Newsround.
Then, in 1989, just days after announcing his exit from Newsround, John made the switch from children's television and took on the presenting role on Countryfile, a programme he remains a vital part of to this day.
Exploring the Cotswolds
In a recent edition of Countryfile, John Craven and Vick Hope explored the Cotswolds, encountering individuals working to champion wildlife and uncovering the traditional expertise and craftsmanship which maintain the area's unique identity.
Adam Henson also had the opportunity to observe some of the region's rare breeds and the initiatives working to safeguard their survival.
Countryfile is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
