Coronation Street briefly recast Toyah Battersby in Thursday night's episode as part of a sad twist in Debbie Webster's long-running dementia storyline. The Bistro waitress is normally played by Georgia Taylor, who has appeared on the ITV soap since 1997 alongside stepsister Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson), stepfather Les and mother Janice (Vicky Entwistle).
In the latest instalment of the world's longest-running TV soap, the character was played by another actress for a matter of seconds in a stylistic twist portraying Debbie Webster's dementia spiral. The hotelier (Sue Devaney) is at the centre of a storyline involving vascular dementia, and in recent weeks her condition has worsened.
Debbie fails to recognise Toyah
Debbie approached a woman and said: "Excuse me, which way is the Rovers?" The woman looked confused and replied: "It's just round the corner...Are you OK, Debbie?" But Debbie immediately asked how the woman knew her name and stormed off, refusing further help.
It was then revealed that the woman was Toyah all along, with Georgia Taylor wearing the same costume and stood in her place looking concerned. In the credits, the character is simply listed as Stranger, played by actress Anya Williams.
Fan reaction to the scene
Reacting to the scene, one fan wrote on Reddit: "I enjoyed that scene today. It hit hard. My first thought when debbie said how do you know my name. Was why didn't the woman explain. Then when it panned to it being toyah I was like, wow."
Taking to X, a second viewer said: "Very heartbreaking #Corrie scene Debbie not recognising Toyah. Dementia is a cruel disease," and a third wrote: "Powerful scene with Debbie not recognising Toyah and us seeing it from Debbie’s POV."
Storytelling devices and Debbie's decline
In recent years, Coronation Street has favoured storytelling devices like flashbacks, flashforwards and dream sequences, moving away from the naturalistic approach that made it famous. Emmerdale has also tried this method before when dementia sufferer Ashley Thomas struggled to recognise Aaron Dingle.
For Debbie, the incident was the latest in a series of bad turns following her diagnosis, having recently believed she was back in the 1980s and working as a hairdresser. It was previously confirmed that Sue Devaney will be leaving the soap in 2027, and Debbie, aware of her mortality, recently told sister-in-law Abbie that she wanted to film her own eulogy for her funeral.
Sue previously spoke of the erratic nature of playing Debbie and wanted to tell the story with "full impact." She said: "I find it really interesting to play and going into that deeper, next journey of the illness."
"It's that thing of who's gonna look after her around that time? Some days she'll be lucid and normal and then other days she will have a bad day."
"That's how it happens, so it's been really interesting to play, it's really moving. I speak to my friend who is a dementia specialist and she tells me the journey I'm going on and if I am doing it correctly."
"You wanna do it right and I don't want to not tell the full impact that dementia has on somebody."
