PC Jess Heywood made her return to Coronation Street during Thursday's (August 27) episode, appearing back on the beat months after her last stint in Weatherfield. Fans of the ITV soap were quick to welcome the character back, with some expressing hopes that she would remain on the cobbles for good.
Return to the cobbles
The copper, played by actress Donnaleigh Bailey, was originally introduced in 2017 as the mentor of the late Craig Tinker as he began his career in the local force. She has appeared sporadically in Weatherfield since then, including last summer when residents gathered to say goodbye to Craig after he was killed in the line of duty.
Jess was also seen back at the station in April during a special episode focusing on domestic violence, in which Todd Grimshaw reported Theo Silverton for the abuse he had subjected him to.
Arrest on the street
This time, Jess was on the street to see Ollie Driscoll. Earlier in the week, viewers saw the Speed Daal chef come to Christina Boyd's aid when he believed she had been attacked by Jack Windass. A drunken Christina had fallen over in the Rovers' backyard when Jake appeared and started recording her. After she had a go at him, he doused her in water, prompting Ollie to chase the teen and tackle him to the floor.
During the latest episode, having broken his collarbone, Jake claims to Gary and Maria that he was on his way to call for Joseph Winter-Brown at the time of the incident. In the Rovers, Christina and Glenda Shuttleworth assure Ollie he acted in good faith, but their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Jess, who arrests Ollie on suspicion of assault.

The return comes after fans issued a clear demand for Jess to become a permanent presence in Weatherfield as Bailey shared updates from filming.
