Jeremy Clarkson apologised to a Millionaire Hot Seat contestant after her time on the show ended over a dramatic last-second blunder.
During Tuesday's episode (September 1) of the hit show, host Jeremy was joined by six contestants: Analiese Cummings, Rafael Henderson from Cardiff, Peter Biggs from Harrow, Jo Stacey from Redhill and Sophie Pulcella from Timperley. They competed for a potential £1 million prize, with only one player taking the Hot Seat at a time.
Strict time limit adds pressure
Contestants must climb the Money Ladder by answering multiple-choice questions correctly, but unlike the classic Millionaire format, they have to contend with a strict time limit. That leaves little opportunity for hesitation, with players forced to decide whether to trust their instincts, answer the question or use the options available to them.
However, Analiese from Croydon found herself under intense pressure after being faced with a question she had only seconds to answer. The contestant had been given the option to pass the question to another player, but instead decided to take her chances as the countdown reached its final moments.
Costly final answer
Jeremy asked: “Which of these made their debut during World War II?” The possible answers were McDonald's, Ford Model T car, Levi's 501 jeans and Coca-Cola.
Analiese admitted she was struggling to decide, saying: “It all seems easy when you're sitting in the chairs.” She eventually narrowed her choice down to two answers but remained visibly unsure. As the clock ticked down, Analiese eventually took a gamble and settled on option C as her final answer.
It was the worst possible outcome. Jeremy immediately pointed out that she had run out of time and that her answer was incorrect. “You literally had no time left. Zero seconds and it's the wrong answer,” he said.
Host's sympathy and viewers' reaction
The host then appeared genuinely sympathetic as he broke the news to Analiese. “Oh. I'm so sorry, Alice. I am so sorry you were doing so well. Everyone was doing so well,” Jeremy told her.
The correct answer was McDonald's, which first opened in 1940. Jeremy went on to explain that the Ford Model T was introduced in 1908, while Levi's 501 jeans date back to 1873 and Coca-Cola was first created in 1886. “So, I'm really sorry about that, but we must now say goodbye,” Jeremy added.
However, the moment left viewers questioning Analiese's decision-making, particularly as she had been able to use her pass and avoid answering the question herself. One viewer wrote on social media: “Oh what was that? Left it until the very end of the time allocation only to get it wrong & she had a pass available.”
Another viewer appeared certain about the correct answer, posting: “#millionairehotseat McDonalds easy won.” Jeremy's decision to reveal the dates of the other answers also caught the attention of viewers, with one warning: “Stop going through all the answers! Others are listening #millionairehotseat.”
The moment showed just how quickly the pressure can build on Millionaire Hot Seat.
