Jeremy Clarkson has revealed which fast saloon car he would choose to buy at the moment, and it is not a BMW or Audi. In his latest column, the former Top Gear and Grand Tour presenter, 66, named the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio as his preferred option among the current crop of saloons.
A Verdict Delivered During Audi Review
Clarkson made his conclusion while reviewing the latest Audi RS5 Avant quattro triptronic, a hatchback saloon from the Ingolstadt marque. Although he praised the Audi for being efficient, powerful, and having a lot of grip, it was a rival that he said he preferred.
Writing in the Sunday Times, Clarkson used the car to make a point about how petrol cars were not losing popularity that quickly. He said: "But if I were in the market for a fast saloon right now, I'd get an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. They were going to stop making it this year because it doesn't even pretend to be in tune with the times."
A Stay of Execution and a Devoted Fan Base
He added: "But they've just announced a stay of execution. Probably because they've just seen the sales figures for the new Fiat Panda. Want to guess, what percentage of those sold in Italy are electric? Nope. You're wrong, I'm afraid. It's 5 percent."
The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, first unveiled in 2015, has developed a growing and devoted fan base, and Clarkson is not the only one to keep coming back to it. The car is not the most practical saloon, nor the fastest, but it is one of the few petrol cars that accelerates like an electric car without the same heaviness in the corners.
