Chase star Shaun Wallace: knee 'still sore' after surgery

Shaun Wallace, one of the stars of ITV's The Chase, has opened up about his health difficulties and how they have affected him. The barrister-turned-Chaser spoke to Mr Motivator on his podcast 'On Your Bike with Mr Motivator', where the fitness coach interviews celebrities while cycling with them.

Pain after knee replacement surgery

During the interview, Shaun, 65, admitted he was still in pain after undergoing knee replacement surgery. When asked by Mr Motivator, real name Derrick Evans, how he was finding the electric bike, Shaun said: “I’ve just had a knee replacement surgery, so this is quite good actually, so quite easy.”

Later, as the pair sat on a bench in the sunshine, he was asked again about his health. He said: “It’s coming on good. It’s still sore. I’ve got arthritis in both knees.”

Running past and future goals

The pair then discussed what kind of runner Shaun was, with Derrick suggesting Shaun seemed like a sprinter. Shaun replied: “Long distance runner I was... very good. I was built for long distance. I run marathons, half marathons. I used to get up in the morning, put my earpiece in, run around Wembley.”

When Derrick enquired whether doctors had advised the surgery, Shaun said: “Well, otherwise I would be living a life of discomfort. Who wants that? I don’t want that.” Asked if he hoped to return to running, Shaun explained: “Hopefully, that’s the big goal for me. I want to have that other knee done as well, and my biggest goal is to put my ear-pods back in ears, go running, listen to A Tribe Called Quest like I used to before.”

Filming delays and recovery

The quizzer's comments came after it was announced in March that The Chase had to delay filming due to Shaun’s surgery. Speaking about the matter for the first time nearly six months ago, Shaun said he was trying to “make up” for time lost. On the Royal Kennel Club podcast, he admitted: “We’re filming now but I’ve just had knee replacement surgery. I had that three weeks ago, I’ve been training every single day to make sure I can physically walk up and down the plank when I go back on March 17th – as I’ve got to make up my own recording time I’m in virtually every day from then and we start the exciting new concept of Chase Around The World throughout the whole of May, I’m really looking forward to that one.”
