Buffy cast 30 years on: three tragic deaths since 2025

Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans have been left heartbroken by three unexpected deaths among the cast since 2025. As the show approaches its 30th anniversary, viewers have been revisiting the series on ITVX, where all seasons are available to stream for free. The supernatural drama originally aired from 1997 to 2003.

Cast members who have died

Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, died in March 2206 at the age of 54 from cardiovascular disease complicated by acute pneumonia. Anthony Head, known for his role as Rupert Giles, died in June 2026 at the age of 72 after complications from pneumonia. Michelle Trachtenberg, who portrayed Dawn Summers, died in February 2025 at the age of 39 due to complications from diabetes mellitus.

Where the surviving stars are now

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy Summers, has recently appeared in Wolf Pack, Dexter: Original Sin, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. She also starred in the live-action Scooby-Doo film in 2002, where she worked with her future husband Freddie Prinze Jr.

Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow Rosenberg, is known for her roles in How I Met Your Mother and the American Pie franchise. David Boreanaz, who played Angel, went on to star in the spin-off series Angel, then Bones from 2005 to 2017, and later SEAL Team until 2024.

James Marsters, who played Spike, also appeared in the Angel spin-off, as well as Smallville, Torchwood, and Marvel's Runaways. He has done voiceover work for Dragon Ball Super and narrated The Dresden Files audiobooks.
