Kate Tolo, the girlfriend of biohacker Bryan Johnson, has revealed she felt relief when he was diagnosed with autoimmune gastritis, saying it proved he was not invincible.
Relief at Diagnosis
Tolo, 30, has been dating the tech multimillionaire for several years. Speaking to The Times, she said: “I was actually relieved when we found out because I was thinking he’s not invincible and there’s gonna be something. Fortunately, it’s a really slow-progressing thing and he has been taking care of his health so much that I suspect that he’s had this for decades and it’s just been sitting there.”
Johnson, 49, revealed his diagnosis recently, saying his stomach was literally “eating itself”. He believes the condition is linked to his inherited hypothyroidism rather than his health regime. There is currently no cure, although Johnson said he and his team are attempting to “solve it”.
Unconventional Relationship
The couple’s relationship was kept private for years before Johnson publicly confirmed it late last year, despite Tolo having worked alongside him at his health technology company Blueprint. Asked whether she considers herself Johnson’s girlfriend, business partner or fellow Blueprint test subject, Tolo said: “It all bleeds into one.”
She added: “Over the past three years there have been moments where our romantic relationship was great and our work one was really tough. There were moments where working together was easy and our relationship was really tough.”
Breaking His Own Rules
Johnson has become known worldwide for his obsessive attempts to slow down and reverse ageing, spending millions on his mission to achieve the biological age of 18. His methods have included taking more than 100 supplements a day, stopping eating at 11.30am and monitoring his night-time erections as an indicator of vascular health. He has also previously revealed that he injected blood from his teenage son as part of his pursuit of longevity.
Despite previously saying a girlfriend could never be his “number one priority”, Johnson admitted when Tolo travelled to Australia for a week: “I miss Kate so badly that I physically hurt. My emotions are stunted, my thoughts are cloudy and my mood has dipped.” After one follower joked, “Bryan, this is how you’ll die,” Johnson replied: “I think you are right.”
