Bourbon biscuit taste test: M&S, Asda, Sainsbury's and more ranked

A man named Tariq sampled bourbon biscuits from several supermarkets, including Marks & Spencer, Asda and Sainsbury's, to determine which one was the best. He ranked each biscuit, noting the strengths and weaknesses of every option.

Marks & Spencer and Lidl results

Tariq described the M&S bourbon as "double-stuffed," saying: "Now the taste is good. There's a smooth level of creamy milk chocolate with a tender biscuit base." However, he added: "But it seems to be lacking that deep, dark chocolatey flavour. Where is the cocoa seasoning?" He rated it 7.5/10.

In contrast, the Lidl bourbon was rated just 2/10. Tariq joked that it was "drier than a piece of bamboo," adding that the "biscuit base was stiff and stale, the cream was non-existent, and it had this strange artificial tinge."

Aldi and Sainsbury's scores

The Aldi biscuits were called "definitely an improvement," but Tariq said "the biscuit base completely overpowers the cream filling" and noted that the "chocolate flavour was lacking." He gave them a 5/10.

Sainsbury's bourbons were described as "stiff," with Tariq saying the "first couple of chews had almost zero flavour." He added: "But once it breaks down into that thick, muddy paste, it has this rich, bitter-sweet, dark chocolate punch. If only the biscuit were softer and the packet size were larger, they would rank higher." They received a 7.5/10, matching the M&S score.

Other supermarkets and final verdict

Tariq said he was not going to "bore" people by tasting the rest on camera, as they were all "exactly the same." These biscuits came from Asda, the Co-Op, Waitrose, and Morrisons. Despite the similarity, he said they were "all fairly good," with a "decent crunch" and a "gritty chocolate texture." He noted: "They also have what looks like sugar sprinkled on top, so they're quite sweet compared to the others." All of these were rated 7/10.

In his final verdict, Tariq said: "if you like it creamy, pick M&S," but "if you like it hard and stiff, pick Sainsbury's." He added that "if you're not really fussy," the rest are also fine and "won't let you down." In the comments, one person joked: "This sounds like my food tech theory evaluation of scones."
