The Lock and Quay pub in Bootle has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade, evolving from a derelict building into a vibrant community hub that will soon host music legends such as Nile Rodgers, Billy Ocean, and The Waterboys. The venue, located on Irlam Road, is set to welcome thousands of visitors for the Salt and Tar Festival from August 13 to 17.
From Dereliction to Community Pride
Safe Regeneration, a social enterprise, took over the pub ten years ago after it had fallen into disrepair. The building, formerly known as the Little Merton, was refurbished with the help of local community members. Today, it stands as a testament to Merseyside resilience and has become a vital hub for the people of Bootle.
Brian Dawe, CEO of Safe Regeneration, shared the pub's inspiring story with the ECHO as part of the Pub Corner series. He recalled the challenging beginnings: "The first day we opened, the fire brigade had to turn up because these kids tried to set it on fire. We also had to phone the police because there was guns found in the pub. I thought, 'Actually, is this my best decision?'"
Community at the Heart
Despite the tough start, treating the building with respect has led to a change of fortunes. The pub is now a community-owned venue with people at the heart of its regeneration. Safe Regeneration initially opened the venue as a pop-up for Christmas, but its success meant it stayed open permanently, and it remains so a decade later.
A new coat of arms was unveiled on Friday night to celebrate the completion of Phase One of the refurbishment. The coat of arms pays tribute to the pub's canal-side heritage. Regulars now treat the pub as a second home, and Brian Dawe expressed pride in what has been achieved.
Ready for a Big Week
From these tough beginnings, the pub is now preparing for its biggest week yet as it stages the Salt and Tar Festival in its expanded outdoor area. The transformation has made the Lock and Quay a pub Bootle can be proud of, and the upcoming festival marks a significant milestone in its journey.
