The World Fireworks Championship in Blackpool has been cancelled this weekend due to adverse weather conditions, organisers have announced.
The event was scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 10, and was set to be the third and final event of this year's championship. Germany's Haupt Feuerwerke were due to perform their display, having won the championship in 2021, a year after their event was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Wales and South Africa have already competed and displayed their firework shows to crowds in Blackpool.
Unsafe Conditions
According to the Met Office, wind and rain are forecast on Saturday, with gusts of up to 46mph expected. Organisers said the forecast made it 'unsafe for the event to proceed'.
VisitBlackpool are looking at other dates when the event could take place.
Organisers' Statement
A spokesperson said: "We are disappointed to announce that the World Fireworks Championship Blackpool, scheduled for Saturday 10 October, will not take place due to forecast weather conditions."
"Following close monitoring of the weather forecast throughout the week, the expected wind speed and direction would make it unsafe for the event to proceed."
"We appreciate that many people were looking forward to the finale of this year's competition but the safety of both the fireworks teams and spectators must always come first. Over the next few days, we will explore whether there are any future dates when the event could potentially take place."
