Brighton and Hove has been named the best city in the UK for a night out at the pub, according to a new study by Capital on Tap, which analysed 32 major British towns and cities. The seaside city leads with 7.74 pubs per 10,000 people, the highest density in the ranking, and an average Google rating of 4.42. Despite the average cost of a pint reaching £6.65, punters remain satisfied with their local establishments.
Norwich and Liverpool follow closely
Norwich secures second place, with an impressive 86% of its pubs operating independently. The city boasts 6.52 pubs per 10,000 residents and an average Google rating of 4.40. Known for its quirky character and famous residents like Alan Partridge, Norwich offers a wealth of non-chain establishments to choose from.
Liverpool takes third place, maintaining an average pint price of £5 and a high proportion of independent inns. Its pubs, with an average Google rating of 4.38, are central to the city's reputation for guaranteed fun, attracting visitors from around the world.
Manchester and Bristol make the top five
Manchester ranks fourth, bucking the trend with a fair number of pub and bar openings in recent years. More than three-quarters (76%) of its pubs remain independent, and the city boasts an impressive average Google rating of 4.36. Notable mentions include The Marble Arch and The Bowling Green Chorlton.
Bristol takes fifth place, with a 4.35 average rating for its pubs. Although the city has experienced some closures recently, there is significant online demand for pub recommendations, suggesting the remaining establishments are holding their own.
York completes the top six
York rounds out the top six, with 5.98 pubs per 10,000 residents and an average Google rating of 4.34. The average cost of a pint in the historic city is just £5. York is also said to be a favourite of actor Johnny Depp, who reportedly became fond of the cocktail bar Evil Eye while filming the 2005 movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
