Minecraft has officially surpassed 425 million copies sold since its launch in 2011, according to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. The figure, revealed in a recent announcement, is up from the 350 million reported by developer Mojang in April 2025, and cements the sandbox game's position as the best-selling game of all time.
Unassailable lead over GTA
The new sales milestone extends Minecraft's lead over GTA 5, which has sold 230 million copies. Sharma's comments suggest it is now impossible to imagine any game catching up, with the only potential challenger being GTA 6, expected to be the biggest entertainment launch of all time when it arrives on November 19. However, given Minecraft's sustained sales pace 15 years after release, its position appears insurmountable.
Sharma also noted that over 300,000 people play Minecraft for the first time on an average day, indicating the game's momentum shows no signs of slowing.
New dimension announced
Looking ahead, a new dimension called The Sift is set to arrive in Minecraft's Java and Bedrock editions next year. This will be the game's first new dimension in 15 years, following The End in October 2011, and the fourth overall after The Nether and Overworld. The Sift will make its debut in Minecraft Dungeons 2, launching on September 29, and will feature new enemy types, companions, and biomes including Meadows and Carapace.
Minecraft's cultural impact is also set to expand with a new Minecraft World theme park opening in London next year. The game's dominance is reflected in its sales figures, which place it ahead of other major titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 (87 million), Wii Sports (82.9 million), and Mario Kart 8/Deluxe (79.9 million).
