Benjamin Satterley, the North East wrestler known as Pac and Neville in WWE and AEW, has died aged 40. The news was confirmed on Monday morning, with tributes pouring in from across the wrestling world.
Satterley was born on August 22, 1986, to parents Jill and Stephen, and grew up in Westerhope, Newcastle, before attending secondary school in Gateshead. He also attended Emmanuel College in Lobley Hill.
Early career and rise to prominence
By the age of 16, Satterley was wrestling locally for backyard promotions, with his technical ability and athleticism shining among his peers. By 18, he was training at St Joseph's Hall in Gateshead, which he described as "pretty much the only wrestling school in the area". He was also an avid Newcastle United fan.
He made his debut in 2004 and went on to dominate the UK independent wrestling scene, winning several titles before moving to Pro Wrestling Guerrilla in 2006. He also worked for TNA, Ring of Honour and Dragon Gate before signing with WWE in 2012.
WWE and AEW success
Satterley debuted on the NXT brand in early 2013, quickly becoming the face of the brand and winning the NXT Championship and NXT Tag Team Championships within his first two years. After moving to WWE's main shows, he feuded with stars including Cody Rhodes and Wade Barrett, earning the 'Breakout Star of the Year' award. He also teamed with Arrow star Stephen Amell at SummerSlam.
When WWE reintroduced its Cruiserweight Championship, Neville won the title and made his WrestleMania debut at WrestleMania 33 in 2017. He left the company the following year.
In 2019, Satterley became one of AEW's first major signings, facing opponents like Kenny Omega, 'Hangman' Adam Page and Orange Cassidy. He formed the group Death Triangle with Penta and Rey Fenix, winning the AEW Trios Championships. He also became the inaugural AEW All-Atlantic Champion and later joined the Death Riders alongside Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli.
Final match and tributes
After returning to AEW TV in September last year, Satterley had been in a rivalry with Darby Allin and challenged for several championships. His last match came on Saturday, September 26, against Andrade El Idolo at AEW All Out, before his unexpected death the following day.
Tributes have come from wrestling colleagues, with Sting saying: "Extremely talented, nothing he couldn’t do. Loved and respected by all of us, god bless Pac’s family." Kevin Owens wrote: "The best lad… we love you."
Satterley's 20-year career inspired many, including the author of this piece, who wrote: "Seeing someone from the North East excel in a sport I love so much has been incredibly inspiring." His family, friends and fans have been left to grieve an unimaginably difficult loss.
