BBC Breakfast hosts congratulate couple on baby boy

BBC Breakfast presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent shared a heartwarming baby announcement during Tuesday's programme, congratulating former guests on the show. The hosts were going through headlines when they delivered the update about content creators Reece and Sophy Finnegan-Knight, known online as Blind and Blonde, who had welcomed a baby boy.

Presenters share the news on air

Jon Kay said: "We've got a lovely update for you this morning, you might remember about a month ago we were joined on the sofa by Reece and Sophy Finnegan-Knight, who were eagerly awaiting the arrival of their baby." Sally Nugent added: "Reece, who is blind, was one of the first people to experience a 3D printed model of his baby's scan as part of a pioneering, pilot scheme, and we've got an update for you!"

Jon continued: "Last night, the couple shared on Instagram that they have welcomed their baby boy, writing that they are over the moon. So lots and love and many congratulations from everybody at Breakfast to Reece and Sophie."

Reece's experience with the 3D scan

During their appearance on BBC Breakfast last month, Reece and Sophy spoke about their pregnancy, with Reece telling Sally and Jon about experiencing the pregnancy scan in a different way, as ultrasound scans are transformed into 3D-printed models. He said: "It was absolutely unreal. We didn't really know what to expect - I mean, it's hard to imagine what an embryo really looks like for me. I've been blind since I was a teenager so as far as I've been told, it looks like a carrot or a potato or whatever vegetable you're on that week."

He went on: "It was amazing. The amount of detail that they have managed to get in the scan and being able to really feel the facets of the face and the little bum sticking out and the legs turning around, it's just amazing. I couldn't believe the amount of detail they managed to get on there."

Preparing for fatherhood

Reece also spoke about how pregnancy can be daunting for anyone, but shared his experience as he prepared to become a dad for the first time. He said: "It makes a massive difference because I think being a parent is scary however you're sighted or blind. You just want to hoover up as much information as possible about your baby and I think that's what I found hard with those early scans."

He added: "I love being blind and I'm proud of being blind so I was very surprised when we went to the scans because it's a very visual experience and I couldn't join in with that and it was harder than I thought. So getting this (3D scan) has been very special."

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am on BBC One and iPlayer.
