Folarin Balogun has emerged as an early star of the 2026 World Cup, scoring twice for the United States in their 4-1 victory over Paraguay. The striker's two stylish finishes and another goal ruled out for offside have made him the focal point of the USMNT's campaign. With home support behind them, Mauricio Pochettino's side has a strong chance of advancing deep into the tournament if Balogun maintains his form.
A Twist of Fate
However, a bizarre series of events prevented Balogun from representing England. Born to Nigerian parents, he grew up in England and played for England's under-21 team, scoring seven goals. Yet he ultimately chose the USMNT at senior level due to a unique circumstance: his mother was banned from flying back to the UK while pregnant with him.
The Mother's Story
When Florence Balogun was seven months pregnant, she traveled to New York to visit her sister. Upon attempting to return to the UK, an airport worker deemed her baby bump too large to fly, and without a doctor's note, she was denied boarding. Forced to stay in New York, she gave birth to Folarin in Brooklyn, granting him American citizenship.
Florence explained to ESPN in 2023: "I don't believe things happened by luck. I think for me to have gone to America and for me to have had him there, it is just something that has really stuck with me. Even when he wasn't even thinking of making an international decision, I'd already made up my mind that he is going to play for America."
Balogun's Dedication
After his brace against Paraguay, Balogun said: "A real dream, it's a dreamy night. I've not been able to take it all in. I'm sure when I get back to my hotel, I'm going to be able to be in the moment and experience how much of an amazing night this is. When I committed, I've always said the fans gave me so much motivation, showed me so much support. For me, the most important thing has always been to repay that. I feel like today is a great opportunity, and I want to continue to show the fans I made the right decision. I'm completely proud, and I want to continue to make the fans proud as well."
