The final novel written by Lord Jeffrey Archer has sold almost 28,000 copies in the UK within days of being published.

The former politician and peer turned bestselling writer died “suddenly and peacefully” aged 86 on October 5. Lord Archer, who served as an MP but was also jailed for lying in court, made millions from his bestselling novels.

Release and Sales Figures

His latest novel, Adam And Eve, was published on October 6, the day after his death was announced. The date also coincided with the book’s originally scheduled release.

UK volume sales of Adam And Eve totalled 27,900 in the week ending October 10, according to NielsenIQ BookData.

Story and Context

The novel is a historical fiction epic and romance spanning the period from the end of the First World War to the outbreak of the Second World War. It revolves around the lives of two characters born hours apart into different social classes, whose lives become permanently entwined as they grow from academic rivals to close friends and eventually lovers.

The story also features an alternative twist on the history of the Second World War, with the actions and choices of protagonists Adam and Eve affecting Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler’s decisions and the fate of the nation.

Final Appearances and Legacy

Lord Archer, who was jailed in 2001 after being convicted of perjury and perverting the course of justice, was due to attend the Cheltenham Literature Festival last weekend to discuss the book. Before his death, Lord Archer had met and signed books for hundreds of fans at a sold-out event with broadcaster Gyles Brandreth at the Leicester Square Theatre in central London.

His debut novel, Not A Penny More, Not A Penny Less, was published in 1976, followed by Kane And Abel in 1979. His other novels included The Prodigal Daughter and A Prisoner of Birth, as well as the William Warwick series and Clifton Chronicles.
