An Antiques Roadshow guest was left needing a stiff cup of coffee after learning that a family heirloom, a Victoria Cross medal, was valued at £250,000 to £300,000. The moment aired during a past episode filmed at Portchester Castle, where expert Mark Smith was visibly astonished by the discovery.
A 'show first' for the Roadshow
Mark Smith declared it a unique moment for the programme, saying: "This is a unique moment on the Antiques Roadshow. In all the years I've been on the Roadshow, we have never had a Victoria Cross. The highest award for gallantry this country has. Who was this man?"
The guest explained that the medal belonged to his wife's grandfather, who served in World War One. The wife recalled having only "vague memories" of her grandfather, who died when she was five, but expressed pride in his achievements.
The heroic deeds behind the medal
Expert Mark highlighted that the soldier fought in the Battle of Passchendaele and read aloud the citation detailing the heroic actions of Sergeant Ockendon, which earned him the Victoria Cross. Mark remarked: "Wow. For that, he is awarded the Victoria Cross. It's a very humble medal." He added that Queen Victoria wanted the medal made from modest material like bronze, as "it's not about the medal, it's about the deed behind the medal."
Staggering valuation leaves couple speechless
When asked if they had any idea of its worth, the guest replied that it was something that would never leave the family. Mark then announced the valuation of £250,000 to £300,000, leaving the couple speechless and gasping before they dissolved into laughter.
The guest exclaimed: "I didn't think it would be that much! I need a stiff cup of coffee!" His wife added: "I'm a bit like my husband... shocked. I didn't expect that at all."
