Alison Hammond has spoken about how her weight loss has allowed her to fit into a go-kart and race her 21-year-old son Aidan, a moment she described as amazing. The This Morning and Great British Bake Off host has lost around 11 stone (69.8kg).
Mindset Shift Beyond the Scales
Part of her journey involved changing her mindset, moving away from focusing on raw numbers and instead celebrating progress through relatable changes, such as clothing becoming easier to get into. She discussed this in an interview with her health coach Ellis Gatfield on his YouTube channel, where he spoke about helping women through perimenopause.
Alison has publicly thanked Ellis on social media. In an Instagram post earlier this year, she wrote: “Massive thank you to the incredible @ellisgatfield who started my whole fitness journey… You made my life so much easier by simple changes and kindness.”
Celebrating Small Wins
Speaking to Ellis about how she changed her mindset to celebrate small wins, Alison said: “Because I was quite a big girl, it was the fact that it took so long to even see a difference.
“So, then you said, ‘Ok, but what’s the difference? How do you feel going up the stairs?’ It was like seeing those things that wasn’t to do with weight, seeing how I was progressing in that sense which was really really good. Seeing my trousers get a bit looser.
“That for me was so much better than just weighing myself because weighing myself, it didn’t actually make me feel good.”
A Go-Karting Milestone
One example of how far she has come is her ability to now fit into a go-kart. Thanks to her weight loss, she can join her son Aidan, whom she had with her ex, Noureddine Boufaied. She recounted how happy he was when she reached the milestone after years of trying.
She said: “When Aidan was young he loved go karting. I could never get into the suits to go go-karting, would never go into the karts. Anyway, recently, we both went go-karting.
“It was amazing [Aidan] lit up. I’ve never seen anyone so happy that I was getting in the car and driving against him and we were racing each other.
“Once I did that with him I thought, ‘Look at all the years I’ve kind of wasted when he was younger and he really wanted his mum to come and drive with him'.”
A Mother's Motivation
This is not the only personal story Alison has mentioned around her weight loss. Recently, she appeared on ITV and discussed how a comment from her mother motivated her. Talking about the moment with her co-host Dermot O’Leary and guest Janet Street-Porter, she said: “I'll never forget when my mum was really ill in hospital.
“She looked at me – she's never commented on my weight my whole life – she said ‘Alison, don't end up like me; try and sort out your weight.’”
