Aldi's potato waffles have been named the best in a taste test comparing supermarket own-brand options with Birds Eye. The £1.45 box of 12 waffles impressed with its thick, fluffy texture and crispy exterior, edging out the branded favourite.
The comparison, carried out by Mia O'Hare, covered waffles from Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Asda and Birds Eye. Each waffle was cooked in the oven according to packet instructions. The results placed Aldi at the top, followed closely by Birds Eye, with Tesco and Asda in the middle and Lidl at the bottom.
Aldi takes the top spot
Aldi's potato waffle was described as thick, delicious and fluffy, with a crispy outer layer. It tasted remarkably similar to the branded variety, and with 12 waffles per packet compared to Birds Eye's 10, it offered better value for money while delivering on taste. It received a rating of 10/10.
Birds Eye's waffle, priced at £1.50 for 10 from Asda, came second with a 9/10 rating. It boasted a perfect crispy exterior and fluffy centre, cooking well to a golden colour. It was far from dry and delivered the rich, satisfying flavour expected from a quality potato waffle.
Tesco and Asda follow
Tesco's waffles, at £1.65, scored 8/10. They were slimmer than Asda's but boasted superior taste, avoiding dryness and packing more flavour with an outer crunch and tender centre.
Asda's offering, priced at £1.44, scored 5/10. It resembled Birds Eye's waffle in appearance but was notably thicker. It delivered a satisfying firmness with an agreeable crunch and fluffy potato inside, but excessive dryness prevented it climbing higher in the rankings.
Lidl brings up the rear
Lidl's waffles, also £1.45, came last with a 1/10 rating. They proved disappointingly bland, emerging from the oven wrinkled and split. While they provided a solid crunch, the centre was excessively dry, and one mouthful was sufficient.
