Albert Dock Liverpool Celebrates 180 Years with Summer Events

The Royal Albert Dock Liverpool will celebrate 180 years since its official opening by Prince Albert on July 30 1846 with a summer programme featuring large-scale photography, dockside dining, and community storytelling.

Birthday Night Projection and Photography

The celebrations begin on the evening of Thursday, July 30, when the facade of the Maritime Museum on the inner quay will host a new Dock Short Lates projection, transforming the historic brickwork into an open-air gallery.

Acclaimed Liverpool photographer Mark McNulty, known for documenting the city's music, nightlife, and cultural renaissance since the 1980s, has collaborated with the dock to present his best work taken around the dock. The projection will run from 9:45pm to 11pm throughout August.

Limited-Edition Dining Experience

Gusto Albert Dock will host a one-night-only dining experience on July 30 with only 180 spaces available. The contemporary Italian restaurant has crafted a bespoke heritage menu that takes subtle influences from the dock's original 19th-century trade routes, incorporating exotic spices, citrus fruits, and rich rums that once arrived at the Mersey quayside. After dinner, guests can enjoy the projection from Gusto's newly refurbished terrace.

Community Memory Campaign

The birthday night launches a summer-long community campaign inviting the public to share personal photographs of the dock from across the decades, from nostalgic family days out in the 1980s to modern-day selfies. One hundred and eighty memories will be selected for a permanent digital memory book and a bespoke Dock Shorts projection at the end of September as part of a grand finale.

Estate Manager at Royal Albert Dock Sean Morrison said: "The Royal Albert Dock is a magnificent piece of engineering, but what truly defines it is the generations of Liverpool people who have made it their own. For 180 years, these colonnades have been the backdrop to everything from casual first dates and family traditions to global cultural moments."

Owner of Liverpool Pictures on the dock Norma Lyons said: "It is an absolute honour to be part of the dock's incredible journey. It really is the jewel in Liverpool's crown, and it just gets better and better. Over the years, the biggest shift we've seen is how international the dock has become."
