Adult star Skylar Mae, 23, earns over $1 million (about £770,000) a month, but she insists a man's bank balance is one of the last things she cares about when dating. She says she would happily date a man earning significantly less than her, even as little as $30,000 (about £23,000) a year, without it being a dealbreaker.
What Skylar looks for in a partner
“I would 100% date someone who earns significantly less than me,” Skylar said. “They just need to be ambitious, working towards a goal and have a good career.”
“I’ll be happy as long as they’re a good human, they’re happy every day, they’re working and they’re very motivated in life.” For Skylar (@officialskylarmaexo), how a man handles the money he does have is far more important than the number sitting in his bank account.
“I just hope they’re a good person and they’re smart with their money,” she said. “Are you investing? Do you have a savings account? That stuff is more important to me than honestly anyone’s tax bracket.”
Income doesn't define relationships
Skylar said a potential partner could earn a tiny fraction of her income and it wouldn’t bother her, as long as he had his own ambitions. She said: “Absolutely. I think it’s super important to have your own motivation that gets you out of bed every morning. I think that’s what humans run off. Do you have something you’re trying to achieve every single day? It’s very important that they have their own goals and ambitions, even if they don’t make nearly as much as I do. They could be making $30,000 a year.”
While earning more than $1 million a month could make dating complicated, Skylar says she tries not to let her income define her relationships. “Yes and no,” she said when asked whether her success makes dating harder. “I don’t put money into who I’m looking for in a partner, so I would hope someone wouldn’t view me as, ‘How much money do you make in a month?’”
Despite her extraordinary income, Skylar said she has surprisingly never had a man admit he was intimidated by her success. “No, surprisingly,” she said. “But I feel like the type of men that I go for in general wouldn’t be insecure, so I think that plays a huge role in it. I think they love how ambitious and motivated I am every day.”
No interest in making herself smaller
Skylar said she has no interest in making herself smaller to accommodate someone who might struggle with her being the higher earner. “I'm very headstrong, I’m a bull, I’m a Taurus,” she said. “If someone was insecure about that, then they’re probably not my person.” She would even be comfortable financially supporting a boyfriend, provided he wasn’t simply sitting around relying on her success.
“I don’t mind doing that, but they do need to have a job or just something that gets them out of bed every day,” she said. “They need to have goals.”
When it comes to what she actually finds attractive, Skylar said it’s less about flashy dates and more about the little things. “Funny is number one. I want someone who’s smart, a good person and close with their family,” she said. “Honestly, helping out where it’s needed, even if it’s just taking the trash out or helping me clean up at the end of the day, impresses me more than money.”
Success hasn't changed her standards
Despite going from having very little to earning more than $1 million a month, Skylar insists her success hasn’t changed her standards for dating. “Absolutely not,” she said. “Anyone who thinks otherwise is totally wrong about me. I came from literally nothing, so I know what that’s like. It is hard to find a job where you’re making money like I do. I’m also just a crazy person who works 24/7, and that’s just what I like. Other people are different, including someone I could potentially be dating.”
“Just because someone doesn’t make a million a month doesn’t change anything. They could be making $5,000 a month (about £3,850), $10,000 a month (about £7,700) or $100,000 a year (about £77,000).”
Ultimately, Skylar said her success has only reinforced that having money doesn’t necessarily make someone a better partner. “It’s all about what kind of person they are at the end of the day,” she said. “You could be with a very rich man and they could be the shittiest person on Earth. I’ve met plenty of them.”
